For most adult women, 60 to 100 beats per minute is the usual resting heart rate range.[2] But that wide range does not answer the question behind most searches: “Is my number good for me?”
In a CDC reference sample, women aged 40 to 59 had a median resting pulse of 71 bpm. Women aged 60 to 79 had a median of 70 bpm.[1] So your resting rate does not need to rise just because you turn 50, 60 or 70.
If your watch says 62, 72 or 82, look at three things next: your usual pattern, what changed around the reading, and how you feel.

“Normal” means the broad clinical range. “Typical” tells you where comparable women actually cluster. “Good” is more personal: it should fit your health, fitness, medications and usual pattern without concerning symptoms.
Do women have higher resting heart rates than men?
Women tend to run a few beats faster than men on average. The difference appears in national CDC data and in a 92,457-person wearable cohort, with plenty of overlap between individuals.[1][3]
That makes sex useful context. It still cannot tell you what one individual woman's ideal number should be.
Does Resting Heart Rate Increase With Age in Women?
Not in a steady march from 40 to 70. The CDC female median was 71 bpm from ages 40 to 59 and 70 bpm from ages 60 to 79.[1]
Large wearable data show a similar reason to stop treating age like a staircase. Resting heart rate rose into midlife and then trended downward after about age 50 in the Scripps cohort.[3]
Your maximum exercise heart rate does fall with age. Resting heart rate is different. Mixing those two ideas is one reason online age charts can be confusing.
Is My Resting Heart Rate Too High or Too Low?
A number matters most when you combine it with your baseline and how you feel. A fit woman at 56 bpm and a woman at 56 bpm who feels faint are not in the same situation.
When is resting heart rate considered high?
A resting heart rate above 100 bpm is generally called tachycardia in adults.[2] Exercise, heat, emotions, illness and other short-term stressors can raise heart rate temporarily.
If your rate repeatedly sits above 100 while truly at rest, discuss it with a clinician. Do the same for an unexplained sustained rise above your usual pattern.
Is a resting heart rate below 60 too low?
Not automatically. Physically active adults can have resting rates below 60, and heart rate also falls during sleep.[2]
A newly low rate deserves more attention when it comes with dizziness, fainting, weakness or other symptoms.
When do symptoms change the decision?
Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting or a sudden concerning heart-rate change needs urgent medical evaluation. The AHA advises calling 911 when a sudden very high or very low rate occurs with serious symptoms.[2]
Why Is My Resting Heart Rate Higher Than Usual Today?
Before you assume your fitness changed, look at the previous day. Sleep, alcohol, illness, hard training, stress, heat and menopausal symptoms can all show up in today's number.
Short sleep is one example. In a 2026 smartwatch study, adults averaging six hours of sleep or less had a higher wearable resting rate than matched adults sleeping longer.[8] Alcohol also raises nocturnal resting rate in a dose-related pattern, with a larger effect in women in a 2026 WHOOP study.[9]

- Measurement: Same device, body position and approximate time as usual?
- Sleep: Shorter, later or more disrupted than your normal night?
- Alcohol: Did you drink yesterday, especially more than your normal pattern?
- Training: Hard workout, long session or unusually demanding day?
- Illness or heat: Fever, infection, dehydration, hot weather or heavy sweating?
- Stress or pain: More physical or emotional stress than usual?
- Hormonal context: Hot flashes, night sweats, or a different menstrual-cycle phase if you still cycle?
- Medication: New medicine or dose change?
- Pattern: One odd reading, several days, or a sustained shift?
- Symptoms: Dizziness, fainting, chest pain, marked breathlessness or unusual weakness?
If it returns to your usual pattern, keep tracking. If the shift persists or comes with concerning symptoms, bring the trend to a clinician.

What Matters More: Your Number or Your Trend?
If you wear a watch or ring every day, your own baseline becomes extremely useful. In the Scripps wearable study, people differed widely from one another, while most individuals moved within a much tighter personal range.[3]
The median weekly fluctuation was about 3 bpm. That does not make 3 bpm a warning threshold. It shows why a sudden move from your usual 62 to 72 can deserve more attention than whether 72 is “normal” on a chart.

Does Menopause Change Resting Heart Rate?
Menopause does not create a separate higher resting-heart-rate target. But perimenopause and menopause can make your daily data feel noisier through hot flashes, disrupted sleep and changing autonomic patterns.
If your watch has started drifting upward, do not assume every change is “just hormones.” Look at the timing, the pattern and what else changed.
Hot flashes can temporarily raise heart rate
A hot flash can push heart rate up for a few minutes. In a laboratory study of symptomatic postmenopausal women, heart rate rose by about 9 to 10 bpm during recorded hot flashes.[5]
This matters if a wearable spike lines up with flushing or night sweats. A short hot-flash response is different from a new resting baseline that lasts for weeks.
What if you are still cycling in your 40s?
Your resting rate can move across the menstrual cycle. A 2024 Oura study detected cycle-related heart-rate changes in healthy younger and midlife women.[6]
If your cycle is still regular enough to track, compare similar phases over time. That can make a monthly rise feel less mysterious.
Resting heart rate is not HRV. RHR counts beats per minute. HRV measures variation in the timing between beats. Menopause research often discusses both, but one does not automatically predict the other.
Is a Lower Resting Heart Rate Better?
In a healthy context, lower resting heart rate often travels with better cardiorespiratory fitness. Higher RHR is also associated with higher long-term cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk across large populations.[4][10]
That still does not make the lowest possible pulse the goal. A number is useful when it fits the rest of the picture.

If fitness is the question, measure fitness. Resting heart rate is a useful supporting signal. VO2 max is a more direct measure of aerobic capacity.

How Can Women Lower Resting Heart Rate Over Time?
If your goal is a healthier resting-rate trend, start with aerobic fitness. Then look at the habits that repeatedly push your own number upward.
1. Build your aerobic base
Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, running and other sustained aerobic work train the cardiovascular system to do more with each beat.
A 2024 meta-analysis of randomized trials in postmenopausal women found that aerobic training lowered resting heart rate by about 3 bpm on average. The exact estimate had very low certainty, so use the direction rather than chasing a three-beat target.[7]
2. Protect sleep and recovery
When your sleep is consistently short or broken, your resting-rate trend may rise with it. In the 2026 HEARTBEAT study, adults sleeping six hours or less had higher wearable RHR than matched adults sleeping longer.[8]

3. Observe how alcohol affects your own data
Alcohol can raise nocturnal resting heart rate the same night. A 2026 study of more than 5.1 million person-days found a dose-related increase after drinking, with a larger effect in women.[9]
If your wearable reliably jumps after alcohol, compare similar nights with and without it. Your own pattern may be more persuasive than a generic rule.
4. Keep moving and keep your strength work
Aerobic exercise has the clearest direct relationship with resting heart rate. Strength training still matters for muscle, function and healthy aging.

5. Do not train through a persistent unexplained change
A new resting-rate shift can reflect medication, illness or another health change. More exercise is not the answer to every elevated reading.

How to Measure Resting Heart Rate Without Getting Misled
The best method is the one you can repeat consistently. A morning pulse, a clinic reading and an overnight wearable number can all be valid without being identical.
How to take your resting pulse manually
Place your index and middle fingers over the pulse on the thumb side of your wrist. Count the beats for 60 seconds.[2]
Do it after sitting quietly. Do not compare a rested morning pulse with a reading taken after stairs, coffee and rushing out the door.
When should you measure?
Morning is practical because it is easier to standardize. If you use a wearable, let the device collect its metric the way it was designed.
Consistency beats cross-device comparison. Compare Apple with Apple, Oura with Oura, and manual pulse with the same manual method.

First, 60 to 100 bpm is the broad adult resting range. Most healthy women in the CDC midlife and older reference groups clustered much closer to about 70 bpm.[1][2]
Second, your birthday matters less than most age charts suggest. The female population center barely changes from 40 through 70.
Third, learn your pattern. A stable number is different from a new shift. Use your baseline, recent context and symptoms to decide what deserves attention.
